The fastest ascent of the Matterhorn by a Swiss mountain climber
Andreas Steindl is a Swiss mountain climber, ski mountaineer and mountain guide. Andreas was born in Zermatt, where he worked as a carpenter before he earned his mountain guide diploma in 2011. He also competes in alpine skiing and mountain running events. On August 27th, 2018 Andreas broke a world record in speed climbing. He sprinted from the Zermatt Kirchplatz (1’616 metres) to the peak of the Matterhorn (4’477.5 metres) and back down to Zermatt – a total of 22.8 kilometres and 2’861 metres of altitude – in only 3 hours 59 minutes and 52 seconds. This is about the same amount of time that a normal mountain climber would need to reach the peak of the Matterhorn from the Hörnlihütte (3’260 m).
