NORQAIN, the independent, family-owned Swiss watch company, is delighted to celebrate the centenary of the iconic Spengler Cup with the Wild ONE Spengler Cup Limited Edition.
NORQAIN has been the Official Timekeeper of the oldest invitational ice hockey tournament in the world since 2019 and this is the third fan-focused piece produced to celebrate the event and the partnership. The free-flowing, high-energy format of ice hockey is a powerful expression of the NORQAINER Spirit – my life, my way.
The 95-piece Wild ONE Spengler Cup Limited Edition is based on NORQAIN’s high-concept Wild ONE adventure watch and has a three-layered case featuring the company’s innovative ultra-robust and ultra-light black NORTEQ®, an exclusive carbon fibre composite. Between two NORTEQ® layers is a rubber shock absorber that delivers class-leading performance – the watch has been tested to 5,000 g. The watch weighs just 84 grammes in total, roughly half the weight of a hockey puck. Finishing the look is an ice blue dial featuring the Spengler Cup logo at 6 o’clock and a surface pattern inspired by the trails left across the ice by players’ skates.
Protected inside the case is the chronometer-certified, 70-hour NORQAIN Manufacture Calibre NN20/1 by Kenissi, recognisable by its bespoke NORQAIN oscillating weight and visible through the watch’s sapphire case back, which also carries the Spengler Cup logo and the inscription “ONE OF 95”. The watch is finished with an animal cruelty-free black rubber strap.
The Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, was first held in 1923. The annual event pits six invited teams from across the globe, as well as the host Hockey Club Davos, against each other. HCD, as the host team is known to its fans, has won the cup 15 times, one fewer than record-holders Team Canada. Last year’s first-time winners, Hockey Club Ambrì-Piotta of Switzerland, will defend their title at this year’s event, which runs for six days starting 26 December. The final will be held in Davos on New Year’s Eve. As Official Timekeeper, NORQAIN will time every minute of every game.
The centenary event will in fact be the 95th edition of the cup, following cancellations during the Second World War and the Covid pandemic. The Wild ONE Spengler Cup Limited Edition is therefore produced in a limited run of 95 pieces.
“The Spengler Cup has become part of the fabric of our young company,” said NORQAIN co-founder and board member, former NHL star, ice hockey legend and Stanley Cup winner Mark Streit. “For me, it’s a full-circle moment, with all my passions coming together in a beautiful watch that really captures our story and the story of one of the great moments in the hockey calendar. We’re so excited to attend this year’s event and to be its Official Timekeeper for the third time.”
Ben Küffer, NORQAIN founder and CEO, said: “The independence of the long-standing Spengler Cup resonates deeply with us, as does the highly competitive, full-on world of professional ice hockey. Every game is an adventure! We’re proud partners of the Spengler Cup and can’t wait to be rinkside for this year’s competition.”
The Spengler Cup Organising Committee president Marc Gianola said: “Just like the Spengler Cup, NORQAIN watches evoke positive emotions. That’s why I’m particularly pleased that the Swiss watch brand inspired by the mountains and the ice hockey tournament from the mountains continue to come together around their shared visions and values.”
The Wild ONE Spengler Cup Limited Edition is water-resistant to 200 metres and comes with a four-year warranty that can be upgraded to five years with sign-up to the NORQAINER community. It will be exclusively available online and at NORQAIN’s partner Chronometrie Stäuble in Davos, priced CHF 5’180.
THIS IS NORTEQ®
NORTEQ® is an innovative, highly shock-resistant carbon-fibre material that was created exclusively for NORQAIN and its watches in a close collaboration between NORQAIN, Jean-Claude Biver and BIWI SA. As well as being six times lighter than steel and three-and-a-half times lighter than titanium, it can also be colourised, giving NORQAIN’s designers the freedom to create and innovate. This carbon-fibre composite is made of carbon fibre, which is commonly used in the aerospace industry, and a high-performance polymer matrix containing 60 per cent bio-sourced material (castor oil).
